Research: Tagging
"Tagging" sea turtles is an important way for us to learn about the movements of individual sea turtles. We can then take the information we gain from the tagged turtles and use it to answer questions about the biology of the species. The LTWG is involved in three kinds of tagging: satellite tagging, flipper tagging, and PIT tagging. Scientists tend to get the most information from flipper and PIT tagged turtles on nesting beaches. Because sea turtles do not nest in Canada (they nest in the tropics), the satellite tagging work done by the LTWG has the most important implications for sea turtles in Canadian waters. |
