Biology

There are seven species of sea turtles:

1. Australian flatback (Natator depressus)
2. Green turtle (Chelonia mydas mydas)
3. Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata)
4. Kemp's ridley (Lepidochelys kempii)
5. Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
6. Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta)
7. Olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea)
8. Black turtle (Chelonia agassizii)

Only two of these species regularly occur in Atlantic Canadian waters: the leatherback turtle and the loggerhead turtle. Therefore, the information on this site pertains to them. Click on the links below to learn more about their biology.
